Simon Lamb from Sylvadale Plumbing & Heating in Portsmouth was mentored by a mentor from Mentor-Net, through the Shaping Portsmouth Business Support Bank.
These are his thoughts…
Thank you for the experience of having a mentor, Nick Elwin.
I was a little unsure how this was going to pan out when I first heard I was successful after I applied and Nick was going to be asking me questions regarding my business.
From the off Nick made me feel at home, our first meeting we discussed my needs, what Nick’s role was and how we planned to go forward. We spent the time looking and discussing all aspects of my business, what was working and what wasn’t. We looked at my costings / profit margins, stock levels and the systems I had in place to see if we could improve and make things sustainable for the long term.
We talked about how my business was growing and things I could put in place to assist my growth both now and in the future. We looked at the different avenues of work that I currently undertake and identified markets that I could expand into and discussed in depth how this could affect the growth of the business.
During the period Nick was mentoring me, I was able to take on my first employee and although this was not a direct action of Nick, his advice and knowledge made the whole process a lot easier than I first anticipated (Dave has now been with us full-time since January 1st 2018)
Thanks to the support you provided in terms of providing a mentor in Nick Elwin & his knowledge and positive outlook on what our company could become. Here at Sylvadale we have taken our first steps on the journey to growing our business into the future.
